Mr. Gundersen, a native of Pennsylvania, had lived on Brandt Island Road, Mattapoisett, for the last ten years.  His mother, Mrs. Gyda Gundersen, lived in West Hempstead, Long.Island, New York.  A brother, Olaf, and a sister, Mrs. Edna Thilesen, both lived in New Jersey, while another brother, Paul, and another sister, Mrs. Astrid Acklund, both lived in West Hempstead.  A third sister, Mrs. Nancy Schmith, lived in Westerly, Rhode Island.

The Lynn was lost in a sudden storm in the Nantucket Sound shortly before 3 a.m. on January 29, 1964. The vessel was waiting out the storm off Monomoy Point when she disappeared after sending out a brief call for help. All three members of the crew--Captain Arnlief Tollefsen, Haakon Gundersen, and Thurson Chelgren--were lost.
